Kodak last week began informing dealers of their decision to cease manufacturing of their DCS Pro Back line of medium format digital backs. The following four models remain available to dealers from Kodak:
- DCS Pro Back 645C
- DCS Pro Back 645M
- DCS Pro Back 645H
- DCS Pro Back Plus
Once warehouse stock is depleted, however, Kodak will not be producing additional units and will not be developing new models in the DCS Pro Back series. Instead, says a memo to dealers, the company will concentrate its efforts in the digital back market segment on CCD sensor design and manufacturing (Kodak provides the sensors used in a number of digital back offerings from other companies).
The memo cites the growing number of high-resolution digital SLR cameras - ones offering quality that rivals medium format - as a key reason for the decision to discontinue the DCS Pro Back line. It further indicates that "Kodak will focus its digital camera development resources on the growing segment of professional digital SLR users," suggesting that new digital models in 35mm-style bodies are in Kodak's future.
DCS Pro Back warranties will be honoured, and service and support will continue. The memo suggests that DCS Pro Back owners contact a Kodak Professional service centre for additional information.
