Canon File Viewer Utility 1.1

The time it took to switch from Thumbnail to Preview, as well as convert photos to quality level 4 JPEGs, was tested.

Testing notes: False color and False Resolution filtering was enabled, as applicable, in File Viewer Utility's preferences. Sharpening was off for EOS-1D and EOS-1Ds photos. Sharpening was set to Normal for D60 photos.

Fujifilm RAW File Converter LE 1.0

The time it took to convert photos to standard TIFFs (the only output option in RAW File Converter LE) was tested.

Kodak Photo Desk 2.0

The time it took to preview, change white balance and save out DCS 760 photos as Best quality JPEGs was tested.

Testing notes: Sharpening and noise reduction were set to off in Photo Desk. Better viewing mode was enabled. White balance was changed with the photo previewed at 50% magnification.

Bibble Labs MacBibble 3.0/Bibble 3.04

MacBibble/Bibble was set to output 6MP D1X photos. The time it took to convert photos to quality level 100 JPEGs was tested. Bibble Lab's Eric Hyman indicates that v3.0 of MacBibble is tuned to take advantage of both multiple processors, when present, and the Altivec processing engine of the Mac's G4 chip. The test results below suggest that, at least for certain types of calculations, RAW photo software that's expressly coded for the Mac's processor architecture is capable of impressive performance.

Testing Notes: Sharpening and noise reduction were switched off in MacBibble/Bibble. Autoleveling was switched on (switching it off reduces processing times slightly). Bibble Labs' Eric Hyman indicates that the beta version of MacBibble used in testing may not be fully optimized for the G4 processor, though like Bibble for Windows it does already take advantage of multiple processors, when present.

Nikon Capture 3.5

The time it took to open, change white balance, save out and batch process photos as Excellent Quality JPEGs was tested.

Testing Notes: Sharpening and noise reduction were switched off in Nikon Capture. Though not reported in the table, all tasks were also performed in the Mac version of Capture 3.0 on both the G4/1.25GHz desktop and G4/800 Powerbook. Interestingly, though Capture 3.0 for Mac was noticeable slower than Capture 3.5 for Mac when opening and saving photos, it was significantly faster in batch conversion operations.

The time it took to open photos into Photoshop through the Nikon NEF plug-in was tested.

Testing Notes: The current NEF plug-in for Photoshop (the one that ships with Nikon View 5.5 for Mac and Nikon View 5.1.4 for Windows) displays a RAW parameters dialog as each photo opens. All times include the delay in clicking past this dialog to continue processing.
1) This computer's limited RAM meant that Photoshop had to draw on virtual memory to complete the task. This extended the processing time somewhat.
