Apple adds antiglare display option to MacBook Pro 15 inch
Tuesday, August 11, 2009 | by Rob Galbraith
The MacBook Pro 15 inch can now be configured with an antiglare display, for an extra cost. Previously, the only laptop in Apple's current lineup that could be ordered with a matte surface screen was the MacBook Pro 17 inch.

As of this writing, Apple's online stores for many but not all countries give the option of choosing an antiglare display with the 15 inch model. In the U.S., the option is US$50; in Canada, CDN$60; in the UK, 40; in Italy, 45. An Apple spokesperson indicates that the antiglare display will be available in online Apple Stores worldwide, though it may take a few hours for the change to propagate. It can be chosen as an option with any of the three standard MacBook Pro 15 inch configurations.

Brick-and-mortar Apple Store locations around the globe will also carry one antiglare configuration, which will be equivalent to the current best-appointed configuration in the online store and includes a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB RAM and 500GB/5400rpm hard drive.

Non-Reflective: An antiglare display can now be selected when configuring a MacBook Pro 15 inch at Apple's online stores

An Apple spokesperson has confirmed that the antiglare version of the MacBook Pro 15 inch is implemented in a manner similar to the antiglare MacBook Pro 17 inch: Apple installs a matte surface LCD panel and silver bezel rather than a glossy surface LCD panel and glass front with black surround. The matte LCD panel has the same specs and should have the same colour characteristics as the glossy LCD panel. They are, in effect, the same LCD panel except for the surface layer.

When we reviewed the display quality of all three MacBook Pro models last month, we applauded their colour accuracy but lamented the fact that purchasers of the 13 inch and 15 inch variants would have to contend with nasty reflections in all but dim environments. It's great to see that two of the three models - the MacBook Pro 15 inch and MacBook Pro 17 inch - are now available with a matte surface. Here's hoping that Apple has plans to extend this to the MacBook Pro 13 inch as well.

TechRestore's Shannon Jean indicates that development of a matte screen replacement option for the current MacBook Pro 13 inch and 15 inch models continues, but a start date for the service has not yet been set.
