Version 1.6.1 of Digital Photo Professional, Canon's flagship RAW file browsing and processing software, will be released as a free update later this month, says Chuck Westfall, Director of Media and Customer Relationship at Canon USA (Westfall's job title has recently changed).
The new release will incorporate functionality first introduced in 1.6, including a Stamp tool for cloning out dust spots, improved batch renaming and support for RAW files from the EOS Rebel XT/350D and D60 (going forward, the D30 will be the only Canon digital SLR not supported in Digital Photo Professional, says Westfall).
In addition, v1.6.1 will fix image processing and image display bugs found in v1.6 and earlier, including ones that impact multi-processor/hyperthreaded-processor PCs and multi-processor Macs. Canon is not yet releasing information on what bugs specifically will be addressed by v1.6.1.
The 1.6.1 updater, when released, will upgrade any previous version of Digital Photo Professional, including v1.6, which is currently shipping with the EOS Rebel XT/350D (v1.5 is the latest version otherwise available to owners of earlier Canon digital SLR models). Version 1.6.1 will also soon be included in the box with the EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS-1D Mark II, EOS 20D and EOS Digital Rebel XT.
The downloadable updater will require one of the following to be already present on the destination computer before Digital Photo Professional 1.6.1 will install:
- Any version of EOS Viewer Utility
- Any version of File Viewer Utility
- Any version of RAW Image Converter
- Any earlier version of Digital Photo Professional
Canon's current plan is to release the v1.6.1 updater for Windows and Mac on March 28, 2005 (Tokyo time zone). It will be available through the web sites of various Canon sales companies worldwide, including via Canon USA's entry point to the Canon Web Self Service System (WSSS). When the updater is released, it should be available by navigating to the Drivers/Software page of any compatible camera.
Canon also plans to release updaters for ZoomBrowser EX for Windows and ImageBrowser for Mac that brings each program up to v5.1. Changes in v5.1 include the addition of RAW file support for all Canon digital SLR cameras, as well as certain Powershot models. The RAW processing controls and capabilities of the now-defunct EOS Viewer Utility have been rolled into v5.1 of these two applications (both of which are shipping with the EOS Rebel XT/350D currently). A date for posting of these updaters has not been set, says Westfall.
March 22: The release date for Digital Photo Professional 1.6.1 has been changed from March 25 to March 28, so we've updated this story accordingly.
