Nikon issues recall of some EN-EL15 batteries (updated)
Tuesday, April 24, 2012 | by Rob Galbraith
Nikon has published an advisory that certain series of EN-EL15 batteries, which power the D800, D800E, D7000 and Nikon 1 V1 cameras, are at risk of overheating and will be replaced at no charge by the company.

Affected EN-EL15s can be identified by their serial number. If the ninth digit is an E or F, then Nikon advises you stop using the battery and contact the company to request a replacement.

Update, April 26, 2012: Both Nikon USA and Nikon Canada have updated their advisory pages. The U.S. page now includes a "click here" link (just below the picture of the battery) that will walk you through the recall process. In Canada, a special email address has been set up to receive battery exchange requests; the address and required information has been added to the Nikon Canada advisory.

Thanks to Peter Burian and Mark McIntosh for their assistance with this article. Thanks to Tim Tamis for bringing this to our attention.
