Nikon rolls out four new lenses including AF-S 85mm f/1.4
Wednesday, August 18, 2010 | by Rob Galbraith
Nikon has today introduced four new Nikkor lenses, three of which are geared for use on FX Format (full frame) cameras. The AF-S 85mm f/1.4G, AF-S 24-120mm f/4G ED VR, AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR and AF-S DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR are all to ship in September. Including these four additions, Nikon has introduced a total of seven lenses this year.

AF-S 85mm f/1.4G

This long-awaited update to the venerable portrait lens includes Silent Wave autofocus, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, Nano Crystal Coat lens coating, internal focusing, FX Format coverage and a two-position (M/A - M) focus mode switch. This lens does not incorporate image stabilizing Vibration Reduction (VR).

The AF-S 85mm f/1.4G is to ship in September at an expected street price of US$1699.95 in the U.S. Full-resolution pictures shot with this lens are here.

AF-S 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

A complete redesign of the existing 24-120mm, the new lens gains a constant maximum aperture of f/4. It also includes Silent Wave autofocus, four-stop (VR II) image stabilization, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, two ED and three aspherical lens elements, internal focusing, Nano Crystal Coat lens coating, FX Format coverage and a two-position (M/A - M) focus mode switch.

The AF-S 24-120mm f/4G ED VR is to ship in September at an expected street price of US$1299.95 in the U.S. Full-resolution pictures shot with this lens are here.

AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR

At 10.7x, the AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR has the longest zoom range of any Nikkor FX format lens and is just shy of the 11.1x range of the AF-S DX 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED (which is meant for Nikon's smaller sensor digital SLRs).

The AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR features Silent Wave autofocus, four-stop (VR II) image stabilization, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, two ED and three aspherical lens elements, internal focusing, Nano Crystal Coat lens coating, a zoom lock mechanism to prevent zoom creep, FX Format coverage and a two-position (M/A - M) focus mode switch.

The AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is to ship in September at an expected street price of US$1049.95 in the U.S. Full-resolution pictures shot with this lens are here.

AF-S DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR

This consumer-level DX format lens is being pitched as the ideal complement to the 18-55mm focal length range of the lens bundled with the D3100, which was also introduced today.

The AF-S DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR has Silent Wave autofocus, image stabilization with Tripod Detection Mode, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm, one high refractive index (HRI) and two ED lens elements and a two-position (M/A - M) focus mode switch.

The AF-S DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is to ship in September at an expected street price of US$399.95 in the U.S. Full-resolution pictures shot with this lens are here.
