Photojournalist comments on early experiences with crowd-sourced project funding
Thursday, April 7, 2011 | by Eamon Hickey
The blog A Photo Editor has posted some brief comments by photojournalist Thomas Van Houtryve about his experience using the new crowd-funding web site Emphas.is, which tries to aggregate large numbers of small contributions to fund worthy documentary photo and visual journalism projects.

Van Houtryve has traveled to Laos to work on a project titled "21st Century Communism". In his comments, he notes the dramatic difference between his previous experience of photojournalism as a "lone-wolf" existence compared to this project, on which he has more than 100 backers who serve as a kind of support team for his work.

When his comments on A Photo Editor were published, Van Houtryve's project was still only partially funded, but it has since gathered US$10,000 from 134 supporters, slightly exceeding the original funding target of US$8,800.
