Extraordinary mug shots of 1920s Australian criminals posted
Monday, February 7, 2011 | by Eamon Hickey
At the end of last year, a French-language web site called La boite verte (green box) posted a series of extraordinary mug shots of criminals or crime suspects taken by the police department of Sydney, Australia in the first three decades of the 20th Century. The images are shot in what seems to be essentially an excellent natural light studio somewhere in an Australian jail or jails (cell bars are visible in the background of some images), and they're quite beautiful black-and-white portraits of an array of fascinating characters in period street clothing.

It appears the pictures are included in a book called City of Shadows: Sydney Police Photographs 1912-1948 (Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales) by Peter Doyle and Caleb Williams.
