Canon unveils STM-series 40mm f/2.8, 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 lenses
Thursday, June 7, 2012 | by Rob Galbraith
Alongside the introduction of the EOS Rebel T4i/650D come two new Canon lenses, the ultra-compact EF 40mm f/2.8 STM and the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. The stepping motor focus mechanism in these lenses is promised to enable them to shift focus smoothly and quietly, even when continuously tracking a moving subject in video mode on the T4i/650D.

The 18-135mm is the slightly smoother and quieter of the two, but with either lens it should be possible to record video and pick up little to no focus noise with the T4i/650D's built-in stereo mic. (Other Canon digital SLRs, ones that place the built-in mic closer to the lens mount than the T4i/650D, may pick up a bit more focus mechanism sound.)
