Adobe announces Lightroom for professional photographers
Sunday, January 8, 2006 | by Rob Galbraith

Adobe has announced the commencement of a public beta program for Lightroom, a new application aimed at professional photographers that the company is developing and expects to ship in the fall of 2006. Meant to offer "a complete digital photography workflow," says an Adobe press release, Lightroom Beta 1 is available only as a download for Mac, though the product will eventually ship for both Windows and Mac. The Windows version may trail the Mac version by several months, however.

In addition to the software itself, a 20-minute overview video and a list of keyboard shortcuts are in the Lightroom section of the Adobe Labs web site. Be sure to read the FAQ also: click the Product Details tab on the Lightroom main page to view. The program will also be demonstrated in Adobe's booth at the MacWorld 2006 trade show in San Francisco from January 10-13, 2006.

A price has not been set for Lightroom when it ships in final form later this year.
