Epson has today announced the P-3000 and P-5000 multimedia storage/viewers, which replace the P-2000 and P-4000, respectively. The P-3000 has a 40GB internal hard drive and the P-5000 has an 80GB drive.

The most notable upgrade to both viewers is what Epson says is the world's first 4-color LCD, a 4-inch, 640 x 480-pixel Epson Photo Fine Ultra LCD. The display's filters are red, blue, emerald green, and "yellowish" green. This enables the LCD to display 16.7 million colors (up from 262,000 in the previous viewers) and about 88% of the Adobe RGB color space, according to Epson.

Both viewers also transfer files at a rate that is 2.5X faster than their predecessors. Other changes include a new industrial design, new software, and an enhanced control interface.

Like the previous Epson viewers, the P-3000 and P-5000 incorporate card slots for CompactFlash and SD cards, and support other card formats via CF adapters. And both viewers, like their predecessors, are able to display RAW files from a wide range of Epson, Canon, Nikon, Konica Minolta, Pentax, and Olympus digital SLRs. They also support a plethora of video and audio formats.

The P-3000 carries an estimated street price of US$499.99 in the U.S. The P-5000 will sell for an estimated street price of US$699.99 in the U.S. Exact shipping dates are not given for either viewer.
