Canon unveils Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E6/WFT-E6A and GPS Receiver GP-E1

Canon has also unveiled two accessories for the new EOS-1D X, the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E6/WFT-E6A and GPS Receiver GP-E1.

Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E6/WFT-E6A The new Wi-Fi transmitter incorporates all the operating modes of existing WFT transmitters such as FTP Transfer, EOS Utility and WFT Server modes and more. It's also the first such accessory from Canon to support the faster 802.11n wireless networking protocol, in addition to 802.11a/b/g, and it's compatible with Bluetooth GPS modules. The WFT-E6/WFT-E6A does not have an Ethernet or USB port, and is considerably smaller than the already-small WFT-E2 II/WFT-E2 II A.

GPS Receiver GP-E1 The new GP-E1 gathers latitude, longitude, altitude as well as UTC time and includes an electronic compass that can properly indicate camera direction whether the EOS-1D X is held horizontally or vertically. Location information passed from the GP-E1 to the camera is then embedded into picture files as they're shot. Like the WFT-E6/WFT-E6A, the GP-E1 is small.

Both units connect to the system expansion terminal of the EOS-1D X and are rated to have the same dust and weather resistance as the camera body itself. Neither accessory can be used with earlier 1-series cameras.

Price and ship date

The WFT-E6A has an expected street price of US$600 in the U.S. and is to ship at about the same time as the EOS-1D X in March 2012. The GP-E1 has an expected street price of US$300 and is slated to ship in April 2012.
