Canon announces PowerShot S5 IS still and video compact camera
Monday, May 7, 2007 | by Rob Galbraith
Canon has announced the Powershot S5 IS, the fourth version of its compact digital still and video combo camera. The new model features a 7.99 million image pixel CCD sensor, ISO 80-1600 sensitivity range, DIGIC III image processor, 2.5 inch (diagonal) rear LCD display, 12X image stabilized zoom, a built-in hotshoe compatible with Canon Speedlites, a new continuous autofocus mode plus 640 x 480 pixel at 30 fps movie recording with stereo sound.

It accepts both SD and SDHC cards and is powered by four AA batteries. Movie clip length now tops out at 4GB or one hour, whichever is reached first.

We're still chugging along with an older S2 IS for personal photography, and absolutely love the melding of still and full-featured video capabilities into one compact camera for weekend shooting. The S5 IS looks like a decent upgrade to the S3 IS (the S4 IS model name has been skipped over), though we'd hoped Canon would have taken the HD video plunge in this camera series by now.
