Wednesday, May 2, 2007 | by Rob Galbraith
Lexar today has announced that 4GB and 8GB versions of its new ExpressCard SSD laptop storage expansion card are now shipping, with a 16GB version planned for later this year.

The ExpressCard SSD is an ExpressCard/34-sized solid state memory card designed to work in Windows and Mac laptops with 34mm or 54mm ExpressCard slots, including Apple's MacBook Pro line. The ExpressCard SSD is compatible with ReadyBoost, a Windows Vista feature designed to improve computer performance. The ExpressCard SSD comes with Windows-only backup software.

The ExpressCard SSD 4GB has an expected street price of US$129.99; the 8GB model is US$199.99. Both are available now. A 16GB will be released later in 2007. The price for it hasn't been set.

Transcend recently announced a similar product, the ExpressCard/34 SSD, in capacities up to 16GB.
