The intriguing"D1 ISO" filter in QImage Pro has been tuned to be more effective on certain types of high-ISO scenes in v7.45 of the US$30 image viewing/browsing application for Windows. Mac users, take heart: it will run, at a leisurely pace, from within Virtual PC 3.0 (and perhaps other versions as well). Even on a fast Windows computer the filter takes about a minute to process one file; from within Virtual PC on a fast Mac, about 3-4 minutes. This makes application of the filter to every noisy image impractical. But it seems like a worthwhile tool for D1 photos in which banding and especially luminance pitting noise overwhelms the frame.
Note that the D1 ISO filter is effective on photos shot at ISO 1600 or below. Author Michael Chaney is working on a separate filter that will clean up the slightly different type of noise prevalent in ISO 3200 and 6400 frames.
