Litepanels Croma on-camera LED light offers variable colour temperature control
Thursday, October 6, 2011 | by Rob Galbraith
Later this year, Litepanels will release Croma, an on-camera LED light aimed at news and event video shooters, including those using digital SLRs for video capture, that features variable colour temperature control from 5600K to 3200K and the ability to dim from full to minimum brightness with "no noticeable color shift," says a press release.

It's specified to run for up to six hours from six AA Lithium batteries (other battery chemistries will give a shorter runtime, and the unit can be powered from AC and other sources too), draws a maximum of 9W of power and is said to provide up to the equivalent luminance of a 50W tungsten light source.

The Croma is housed in a soft-to-the-touch rubber and plastic shell, weighs 12 oz/340g, measures 6"W x 4"H x 2"D / 152mm x 102mm x 51mm and, as you can see in the pictures above, has a trimmer and more modern styling than the company's existing Micro-series offerings. The unit comes with Litepanels' BallHead Shoe Mount Adapter, which is comprised of a small metal locking ball head, shoe mount and 1/4-20 thread, plus a gel filter kit, AC adapter with international plug set and black canvas carrying case. A base plate that, among other things, allows for quick positioning of the Croma off-camera on a flat horizontal surface, will be an extra-cost option.

Note : The press release describes the AC adapter as being an optional accessory, but a Litepanels PR representative has confirmed that it is in fact included with each Croma. Also note that the press release lists weight and dimension figures in metric that don't match up with the imperial figures, so we've adjusted the metric on the assumption that the imperial info is correct.

The Litepanels Croma is slated to ship before the end of 2011 in the U.S. and Europe (and perhaps other locales too). In the U.S., the manufacturer's suggested retail price is US$649. The actual selling price at reputable dealers is likely to be less.
