Examining the Toledo Blade's digitally-altered photo
Saturday, April 7, 2007 | by Mike Sturk

An NPPA article details the circumstances surrounding the Toledo Blade's running of a news photo that had been digitally altered by the photographer to remove a pair of legs from the background.

The March 31, 2007 photo shows the Bluffton University baseball team huddled together, praying for five teammates killed in a bus accident. The legs are visible in other photographers' photos of the same scene, but in the Blade photo, staff photographer Allan Detrich has admitted to using Photoshop to remove them.

The NPPA article says that Detrich has given two different and conflicting accounts of how the altered picture made it into print. Detrich addresses the controversy on his blog. He has been suspended with pay for two days while the Blade's investigation into the matter continues. The unaltered version of the photo is here.

Update, April 9, 2007: Allan Detrich has now resigned his position at the Toledo Blade. The newspaper's examination of Detrich's photos in its archive continues.
