Photographers usher in 2006 with panorama photos
Tuesday, January 3, 2006 | by Rob Galbraith

The web site panoramas.dk currently features 360-degree QuickTime VR panoramas from New Year's Eve, taken in 16 different cities as revellers ushered in 2006. Leading off the collection of immersive pictures by 18 different photographers is a stunning panorama by Jook Leung, created in New York's Times Square at midnight.

In a message today on the D1scussion mailing list, Leung - who was positioned on stage only a few feet from singer Mariah Carey during the countdown - says that he captured the frames for the panorama using a Nikon D2X and Nikkor 8mm f/2.8 fisheye lens. The camera was set to record RAW NEFs; the exposure settings were 1/15 at f/5.6 at ISO 400. Camera Raw within Photoshop CS2 was used for RAW conversion. For the frames that comprise the panorama, he converted each file twice - once for highlight detail and a second time for shadow detail - then blended the two together using a Photoshop Action he has developed.
