diAx activates Swiss GPRS network
Monday, October 2, 2000 | by
Mobile phone carrier diAx has activated Switzerland's first GPRS mobile network. GPRS technology permits much faster transfer of data, including digital pictures, across a GSM phone. The carrier joins the UK's BT Cellnet among the first carriers to switch on GPRS for commercial use. A dearth of shipping handsets that support GPRS currently limits the usefulness of the technology on the few networks that currently support it, however. Motorola recently announced the P7389i, a tri-band GSM phone that includes GPRS support. The Siemens S40, another GPRS-capable phone, may be available as soon as the end of this year. Earlier this year Ericsson announced the R520m, with both GPRS and Bluetooth support. It hasn't yet shipped.
