Apple unveils new Macs
Wednesday, July 19, 2000 | by
Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled several new Macs during his morning keynote address at MacWorld New York:

"PowerMac G4 Cube." A desktop Mac built into an 8" x 8" x 8" case, with a toaster-style top-loading CD/DVD-ROM slot, dual USB ports, dual FireWire ports, 10/100BT Ethernet, no cooling fan for quiet operation and Harmon/Kardon speakers. If desk real estate is at a premium, and internal expandability is not critical, the new G4 Cube will be a fun choice for Mac users.

Two models have been introduced:

  • PowerMac G4 Cube: Includes a 450mhz G4 processor, 64MB of RAM, CD/DVD-ROM, 20GB hard drive, USB, FireWire, iMovie 2.0 software, Airport-capable (Airport card is not included) and a new-design keyboard and mouse. It's available in early August at a list price of US$1799.

  • PowerMac G4 Cube: Includes a 500mhz G4 processor, 128MB of RAM, CD/DVD-ROM, 30GB hard drive, USB, FireWire, iMovie 2.0 software, Airport-capable (Airport card is not included) and a new-design keyboard and mouse. It's available exclusively from Apple's online store in early August at a list price of US$2299.

Dual Processor G4 Macs. The current 450mhz G4 and 500mhz G4 models now sprout an additional processor running at the same speed, for tremendous performance improvements in Photoshop and any other applications that take advantage of dual processor architecture. The new desktop Macs include gigabit Ethernet on the motherboard, as well as greater-capacity hard drives: 30GB for the 450mhz model, 40GB for the 500mhz model. Apple will continue to offer a 400mhz single processor model with a 20GB hard drive and gigabit Ethernet. All three will included a redesigned keyboard and an optical mouse. The new Macs are shipping today, says Jobs, at the same price as the models they replace.

New iMacs. The two year old iMac concept is continued, with 4 new models, ranging in price from US$799 to US$1499. All include a 56K modem, USB and Ethernet as before, as well as either a CD-ROM or CD/DVD-ROM drive.

New iMacs

  • iMac. Includes a 350mhz G3 processor, 64MB of RAM, CD-ROM, 7.5GB hard drive and new-design keyboard and mouse. It will be available in September in Indigo (deep blue), says Jobs, at a list price of US$799.

  • iMac DV. Includes a 400mhz G3 processor, 64MB of RAM, CD-ROM, 10GB hard drive, FireWire, iMovie 2.0 software, Airport-capable (Airport card is not included) and a new-design keyboard and mouse. It's available now in Indigo (deep blue) and Ruby (deep red) at a list price of US$999.

  • iMac DV+. Includes a 450mhz G3 processor, 64MB of RAM, CD/DVD-ROM, 20GB hard drive, FireWire, iMovie 2.0 software, Airport-capable (Airport card is not included) and a new-design keyboard and mouse. It's available now in Indigo (deep blue), Ruby (deep red) and Sage (emerald green) at a list price of US$1299.

  • iMac DV Special Edition. Includes a 500mhz G3 processor, 128MB of RAM, CD/DVD-ROM, 30GB hard drive, FireWire, iMovie 2.0 software, Airport-capable (Airport card is not included) and a new-design keyboard and mouse. It's available now in Graphite and Snow (white) at a list price of US$1499.

Also introduced during the keynote:

  • iMovie 2.0. The new version of Apple's digital video editing software fixes what few holes v1.0 had for users, like me, with light video editing needs. Unlimited numbers of clips can now be imported, playing audio from one clip while displaying the video from another no longer requires a complicated workaround, additional effects, including sepia tone and soft focus, have been added, and the user interface has been revamped. It will be included with the iMac DV, iMac DV+, iMac DV SE, and available for US$49 from Apple's website in late August.

  • New displays. Jobs unveiled a new 17" Apple Studio Display with a Diamondtron flat screen CRT, Colorsync and dual USB ports, as well as a 15" flat panel Apple Studio Display.
