Software updates roundup
Friday, September 21, 2007 | by Rob Galbraith
In recent weeks, updates or beta versions of various digital photography applications have been released from Adobe, Bibble, Breeze Systems, DataRescue, Phase One, X-Rite and more. Here's a roundup:

DataRescue PhotoRescue 3.1 Build 10064 for Mac and Windows The new version of the powerful photo recovery application fixes bugs and improves the recovery of images taken with the Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro. This update also incorporates the memory card testing and erasing features first introduced in beta form this year. Licensed users of an earlier v3.x version can obtain v3.1 Build 10064 by downloading the demo, which will automatically convert to the registered version when installed on a machine with an existing licensed copy.

The company is working on another update, says DataRescue's Pierre Vandevenne, that will beef up the recovery of files from the Canon EOS 40D. A precise release date for that update hasn't been set, but is expected soon. (Shortly after this story was published, v3.1 Build 10127 was released on the DataRescue website).

Breeze Systems DSLR Remote Pro 1.5RC1 for Windows The almost-complete next version of the slick Canon camera control application adds the ability to autofocus the EOS-1D Mark III and EOS 40D when Live View mode is engaged, through an innovative contrast detection-based autofocus function similar to that found in compact digital cameras and that doesn't require the mirror to be lowered to work. Both cameras can be manually focused from within the software as well, using either keyboard arrow keys or a mouse's scroll wheel.

DSLR Remote Pro 1.5RC1 for Windows is available for direct download via this link. More information on the program is here. Breeze Systems' Chris Breeze indicates that the final release of 1.5 should be out before the end of September 2007.

ICC ColorEyes Display Pro 1.3.0 for Mac The Mac version of the superb monitor profiling software gains the ability to automatically adjust the backlight brightness of Apple-brand flat panel displays (both built-in and external). To obtain the Mac version update, registered owners can download and install the demo. A new version of ColorEyes Display Pro for Windows is also in the works; the latest version is 1.2.8.

X-Rite Eye-One Match 3.6.2 for Mac and Windows The Windows version will now run in 64-bit Windows Vista while the Eye-One Pro and Eye-One iO drivers have been improved on both platforms. The software is available for download here.

Phase One Capture One 4 beta for Mac and Windows Phase One is offering a sneak peek at the next major release of their RAW conversion and image editing software, Capture One. Capture One 4 beta incorporates a new program layout, metadata-based RAW image versioning, improved, faster image processing and more. The current Capture One 4 beta release expires November 1, 2007 and is based on the feature set of Capture One LE. More information is in the release notes, a recent Phase One newsletter and in several video screencasts showing the software in action (select Take a look at how it works on the Capture One 4 beta intro page to access the screencasts).

Adobe Camera Raw 4.2 for Mac and Windows versions of Photoshop CS3 New camera and digital back RAW files supported include the Canon EOS 40D, Leaf Aptus 17, Aptus 54s and Aptus 75s and Phase One P 20+, P 21+, P 25+, P 30+ and P 45+. The amount of luminance noise reduction applied when the slider is set to 0 has been reduced, relative to Camera Raw 4.1.

Camera Raw 4.2 can be downloaded from its respective Mac and Windows pages on the Adobe website, or more conveniently via the Adobe Update Manager feature of Photoshop CS3 (choose Updates from the Help menu to start the process). Camera Raw 4.2 is a free update for registered users of Photoshop CS3.

Camera Raw 4.2 can also open and process CR2s from Canon's PowerShot G9, but that support hasn't yet been fully tested by Adobe and therefore this camera isn't yet on the list of models that are officially supported.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.2 for Mac and Windows All the changes in Camera Raw 4.2 are found in Photoshop Lightroom 1.2 also, plus various feature tweaks and bug fixes described here. Version 1.2 can be downloaded from separate Mac and Windows support pages or via the update feature of the program (choose Check for Updates from the Help menu to get things underway). Lightroom 1.2 is a free update for licensed users of the program.

Light Crafts LightZone 3.1 for Mac and Windows Added is the ability to make selections based on colour or luminosity, an improved Re-light function, performance improvements and various bug fixes. More information on what's changed is here. To download, choose Check for Update from the Help menu within the program.

Bibble Labs Bibble 4.98e Broad support for Canon's EOS 40D, including tethered operation and the ability to process both RAW and sRAW CR2 files, headline the list of changes. The update can be downloaded from the Bibble website (registration required).
