NPPA attorney comments on police obstruction of photographers

The war on terrorism has become the war on photography, says National Press Photographers Association general counsel Mickey Osterreicher, as quoted on the web site of the (U.S.) National Press Club. In a presentation to Press Club members, Osterreicher detailed what he says is increasing repression and obstruction of photographers, both amateur and professinal, by police in the U.S. using what he refers to as a "catch-and-release" program.

Review: Delock Card Reader FireWire B (Nr. 91694)

Over the last year or so, the supply of FireWire-equipped CompactFlash card readers has almost completely dried up, despite the fact that, for many photographers who use Macs, FireWire is their computer's only peripheral port that's fast enough to allow for efficient offloading of pictures. That's the bad news. The good news is that a new FireWire 800 CompactFlash card reader has arrived on the scene, one that provides true FireWire 800 speeds, a compact design and excellent compatibility with all but certain older cards. Called the Delock Card Reader FireWire B (Nr. 91694), it nicely fills the opening left by the demise of all earlier FireWire readers. If you're a Mac user in particular it may carry you through until native USB 3.0 ports begin popping up on Apple's products. Read on for a rundown of our experience with the Delock reader, based on both six weeks of regular use as well as performance and compatibility testing.

Q&A with enlight photo's James Madelin about ioShutter (updated)

Next month, photography accessories maker enlight photo will release ioShutter, a cable and an app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that enables these devices to fire a connected camera. The 35.4in/90cm ioShutter cable runs from the headphone jack to the camera's remote input. At launch, one cable will be available for Canon, Pentax and Hasselblad models with a 2.5mm remote port, and a second cable will support N3-socket Canons. A Nikon 10-pin cable is planned. The app is in two flavours, Lite and Pro, with the latter providing the broadest range of control for shooting time lapse sequences, Bulb exposures, sound triggered photos and more, plus the various app functions can be used individually or together. In this article, enlight photo's James Madelin answers our questions about ioShutter, focusing mainly on the features of the Pro version of the app.

Possible unannounced Canon digital SLR spotted and photographed in Africa (updated)

While on a shoot in Kenya, photographer and Aperture Academy instructor Stephen Oachs came across someone taking pictures with the upcoming Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x, EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM and EOS-1D X. But that's not the only gear that caught Oachs' attention. He also spotted - and took a photo of - the same man snapping away with what looks like an as-yet-unannounced Canon digital SLR, one whose button placement and other features distinguish it from existing models.

Joe McNally posts blues guitarist video recorded with Nikon D4

Photographer Joe McNally, who shot numerous still photos with the D4 for Nikon leading up to the camera's launch earlier this month, has now posted a video he and his team recorded with the new pro digital SLR. It's of blues guitarist Little Freddie King, and features the musician playing as well as being interviewed. Says McNally: "He made for a wonderful subject for stills. But, his is a story that has heart, soul, history, legs and music. Shooting the video let us see him, and let us listen, too."

Eye-Fi CEO says patented technology violated by Wireless LAN SD standard

At the opening of the CES trade show last week, the SD Association announced the Wireless LAN SD standard, an add-on to the specification for SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards that provides a framework for incorporating Wi-Fi features. Eye-Fi, which has been making SD and SDHC cards with embedded Wi-Fi for several years, subsequently told us that the SD Association's move was premature and hinted at the possibility of a legal response. Now, Eye-Fi CEO Yuval Koren has issued a more detailed statement, one that echos the company's original position: that the new standard runs afoul of Eye-Fi's patents.

Adweek: Corey Rich's Nikon D4 video

Adweek has published an interesting article on the Nikon D4 promo video shot for Nikon by adventure shooter Corey Rich. "To launch its D4 professional-grade DSLR, Nikon asked photographer Corey Rich to use the camera to shoot video and stills—all of his own choosing. "They said, 'It's a blank canvas, and it's up to you to fill it,'" Rich recalls. In the end, working with agency K+L in Tokyo, he filmed three of the world's top adventure athletes in their element, from Moab to Mexico, for a gorgeous mini-documentary that asks what drives these fringe sports devotees— and lets the camera do its thing."

The cable, when used with a companion app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, enables these devices to fire a connected camera. A free Lite version of the app is already out, while the cable (which will come in both 2.5mm and Canon N3-socket versions) had originally been planned for release in December of last year.

Eye-Fi to SD Association: our intellectual property is not available

Earlier this week, the SD Association announced an add-on to the SD specification, called the Wireless LAN SD standard, which provides SD, SDHC and SDXC card makers a framework for incorporating Wi-Fi wireless functions into their products. Eye-Fi has been making SD and SDHC cards with embedded Wi-Fi for several years, so we asked the company what role, if any, Eye-Fi played in the development of the Wireless LAN SD standard. The answer back was in the form of an official statement, one with a clear message: Eye-Fi believes the capabilities outlined in the Wireless LAN SD standard may tread on their intellectual property and that "you can draw your own conclusions as to what this means" about the company's intentions going forward.

Understanding the Nikon D4 battery's lower capacity rating

Nikon's adoption of a lower capacity battery for the D4 was a bit of a head-scratcher, especially in a camera that's overflowing with specification improvements. We sat down this week with Toshiaki Akagi, an engineer and senior manager at Nikon in Japan, as well as a key figure in the development of the company's newest pro digital SLR, and got the skinny on why, in the case of the EN-EL18, less is more. Here's what we learned.

Larger sensor at the heart of 14.20 million image pixel Canon Powershot G1 X

Canon has unveiled a new PowerShot model that's certain to be a hit with serious amateurs and pros seeking a weekend carry-about camera. Called the PowerShot G1 X, it combines a Canon-developed 14.20 million image pixel CMOS image sensor, one that's almost as large as the company's 1.6X crop factor digital SLRs, with the general styling and features of the company's current PowerShot flagship, the G12. The G1 X is expected to deliver similar image quality and depth of field characteristics as a camera like the 60D, but in a smaller, lighter package that's meant to operate more like a top-end point-and-shoot than a digital SLR.

Updated: Alternate mounting options for the Vagabond Mini Lithium

Back in November, we published a roundup of the light stand mounting methods available for the Vagabond Mini Lithium. Since then, a new option has emerged. Called the VML Bracket, it's the first (and only, as far as we know) third party accessory to be created and sold expressly for the purpose of attaching the Paul C. Buff portable power pack to a stand. We've added information on this new product to the roundup, and rewritten the conclusion to factor in its arrival.

Snapseed image editor free today

Snapseed 1.3.1, Nik Software's smart, simple image editing app for the Apple iPad and other iOS devices, is available for free for a limited time. Snapseed is by far the most fluid and pleasant-to-use app we've tried for making adjustments to photos on an iPad. While there's plenty it doesn't yet do, it excels at making basic tone and colour corrections, including selective corrections to targeted areas such as faces.

First Look: Nikon Mount Adapter FT1

Back in October, the Nikon 1 system launched with a quartet of 1 Nikkor lenses covering focal lengths between 27mm and 297mm (35mm frame equivalent). These lenses are crisp, and three of the four are especially compact too, but if you've wanted to reach further into the telephoto range with Nikon's J1 or V1 cameras, or work at apertures wider than f/2.8, you've been out of luck. Until now. Last week's release of Mount Adapter FT1 brings most of the catalog of full-size Nikkor lenses to the Nikon 1 system. Lenses with an AF-S designation are able to autofocus, while others will work but with restrictions on their capabilities. Here's a first look at the newest and perhaps most interesting accessory to emerge for the Nikon 1 system to date, especially for those - like me - who want to combine the stealthy operation of the camera with some of Nikon's longer telephoto or wider aperture lenses.
