The war on terrorism has become the war on photography, says National Press Photographers Association general counsel Mickey Osterreicher, as quoted on the web site of the (U.S.) National Press Club. In a presentation to Press Club members, Osterreicher detailed what he says is increasing repression and obstruction of photographers, both amateur and professinal, by police in the U.S. using what he refers to as a "catch-and-release" program.

Over the last year or so, the supply of FireWire-equipped CompactFlash card readers has almost completely dried up, despite the fact that, for many photographers who use Macs, FireWire is their computer's only peripheral port that's fast enough to allow for efficient offloading of pictures. That's the bad news. The good news is that a new FireWire 800 CompactFlash card reader has arrived on the scene, one that provides true FireWire 800 speeds, a compact design and excellent compatibility with all but certain older cards. Called the Delock Card Reader FireWire B (Nr. 91694), it nicely fills the opening left by the demise of all earlier FireWire readers. If you're a Mac user in particular it may carry you through until native USB 3.0 ports begin popping up on Apple's products. Read on for a rundown of our experience with the Delock reader, based on both six weeks of regular use as well as performance and compatibility testing.

Next month, photography accessories maker enlight photo will release ioShutter, a cable and an app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that enables these devices to fire a connected camera. The 35.4in/90cm ioShutter cable runs from the headphone jack to the camera's remote input. At launch, one cable will be available for Canon, Pentax and Hasselblad models with a 2.5mm remote port, and a second cable will support N3-socket Canons. A Nikon 10-pin cable is planned. The app is in two flavours, Lite and Pro, with the latter providing the broadest range of control for shooting time lapse sequences, Bulb exposures, sound triggered photos and more, plus the various app functions can be used individually or together. NASA releases stunning high-resolution photo of Earth from space

NASA today has released a stunning 64-megapixel photo of Earth from space. Eye-Fi CEO says patented technology violated by Wireless LAN SD standard

At the opening of the CES trade show last week, the SD Association announced the Wireless LAN SD standard, an add-on to the specification for SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards that provides a framework for incorporating Wi-Fi features. Eye-Fi, which has been making SD and SDHC cards with embedded Wi-Fi for several years, subsequently told us that the SD Association's move was premature and hinted at the possibility of a legal response. Now, Eye-Fi CEO Yuval Koren has issued a more detailed statement, one that echos the company's original position: that the new standard runs afoul of Eye-Fi's patents.

Kodak expects to complete its restructuring and emerge from bankruptcy protection in 2013.

Earlier this week, the SD Association announced an add-on to the SD specification, called the Wireless LAN SD standard, which provides SD, SDHC and SDXC card makers a framework for incorporating Wi-Fi wireless functions into their products. Eye-Fi has been making SD and SDHC cards with embedded Wi-Fi for several years, so we asked the company what role, if any, Eye-Fi played in the development of the Wireless LAN SD standard. The answer back was in the form of an official statement, one with a clear message: Eye-Fi believes the capabilities outlined in the Wireless LAN SD standard may tread on their intellectual property and that "you can draw your own conclusions as to what this means" about the company's intentions going forward.

Announced last September, Toshiba's FlashAir memory/wireless SDHC combo card is nearing release. It offers a capacity of 8GB, 802.11b/g/n wireless (and actual Wi-Fi throughput that's promised to be up to about 1.2MB/s), a Class 6 minimum speed rating and wireless features derived from the recently-announced Wireless LAN SD standard. The FlashAir 8GB card is to ship globally in February or March of this year, with an expected street price in the U.S. of about US$60-65.

Fujifilm has announced the X-Pro1, a 16-million image pixel interchangeable-lens compact system camera with a new "X-Trans CMOS" APS-C size sensor. Announced along with the X-Pro1 are three prime lenses to fit the camera's new X mount: an 18mm (27mm equivalent) f/2.0, a 35mm (53mm equivalent) f/1.4, and a 60mm (90mm equivalent) f/2.4. The camera features a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder (like the X100), a top ISO of 25,600, and no anti-aliasing filter over the sensor.

Called the PowerShot G1 X, it combines a Canon-developed 14.20 million image pixel CMOS image sensor, one that's almost as large as the company's 1.6X crop factor digital SLRs, with the general styling and features of the company's current PowerShot flagship, the G12. The G1 X is expected to deliver similar image quality and depth of field characteristics as a camera like the 60D, but in a smaller, lighter package that's meant to operate more like a top-end point-and-shoot than a digital SLR.

Sony unveils XQD memory cards, readers

Sony has announced a pair of XQD memory cards, in 16GB and 32GB capacities, as well as a USB 3.0 reader and ExpressCard/34 adapter for the emerging memory card format. Sony's announcement has been timed to coincide with the unveiling of the Nikon D4, which has both CompactFlash and XQD card slots. The company says that its XQD cards will be faster than existing CompactFlash offerings in Nikon's new flagship digital SLR.

Nikon has announced the D4, a new pro digital SLR that features a 16.16 million image pixel full-frame CMOS image sensor, 10fps top shooting rate (or 11fps with restrictions), a standard ISO range of 100-12,800 (and an extended range of 50-204,800), a revised 51-point AF system capable of autofocusing with f/8 lenses, all-new 91,000-pixel RGB ambient/flash metering sensor, twin memory card slots (CompactFlash and the emerging XQD format), EXPEED 3 image processing, 1080p video capture with audio monitoring and optional uncompressed video output through the HDMI port, built-in Ethernet, a new EN-EL18 battery, in-camera HDR and timelapse creation, all in a dust and weather sealed magnesium alloy body.

Nikon to ship AF-S 85mm f/1.8G in March for US$499.95

Nikon has also announced the AF-S 85mm f/1.8G, an update of the fast aperture telephoto that features a nine-element optical design, seven-blade aperture diaphragm and Silent Wave autofocus. It's to ship in March at an expected street price of US$499.95 in the U.S.

First Look: Nikon Mount Adapter FT1

Back in October, the Nikon 1 system launched with a quartet of 1 Nikkor lenses covering focal lengths between 27mm and 297mm (35mm frame equivalent). These lenses are crisp, and three of the four are especially compact too, but if you've wanted to reach further into the telephoto range with Nikon's J1 or V1 cameras, or work at apertures wider than f/2.8, you've been out of luck. Until now. Last week's release of Mount Adapter FT1 brings most of the catalog of full-size Nikkor lenses to the Nikon 1 system. Lenses with an AF-S designation are able to autofocus, while others will work but with restrictions on their capabilities. Here's a first look at the newest and perhaps most interesting accessory to emerge for the Nikon 1 system to date, especially for those - like me - who want to combine the stealthy operation of the camera with some of Nikon's longer telephoto or wider aperture lenses.
