| Casting light on the PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 - Continued |
 |
On the previous page, we made the point that the first HyperSync mode provides the fastest standard sync speed, besting a wire as well as all wireless triggering devices we've tried. How high you can go with HyperSync, at least the first mode that doesn't sacrifice strobe brightness, is dictated in large part by the camera's shutter design and sensor size. A fast shutter and smaller sensor are good. A slow shutter and big sensor are not.
The blank wall photos below will show you where this mode of HyperSync ranks relative to other triggering options. All photos were taken with an EOS-1D Mark III, at shutter speeds ranging from 1/160 to 1/500. As you'll see, things don't get interesting with this camera until 1/320. By 1/500, HyperSync is the only triggering option still standing.
The triggering methods represented are:
-
MicroSync The MicroSync Digital wireless transmitter and receiver
-
Cactus One of the better-regarded products in the class of so-called "eBay triggers," the Cactus Wireless Flash Trigger V2s is also unique among low-cost units in that it both claims, and actually has, U.S. FCC certification
-
Plus II The PocketWizard Plus II deployed as both transmitter and receiver
-
MultiMAX The PocketWizard MultiMAX set to Fast Mode (which reduces wireless signal delay slightly by reducing the number of bits of data sent during the transmission) and deployed as both transmitter and receiver
-
Wire A cable from the PC sync socket of the camera to the power pack
-
HyperSync A MiniTT1 with its HyperSync Offset value set to -150, transmitting to a MultiMAX receiver
The strobe was a Dyna-Lite Arena series pack set to 600ws and driving a 4080SP bi-tube head.
