Nikon reveals details of upcoming D70 digital SLR - Continued
Camera
Type Single-lens reflex interchangeable lens digital camera
Lens Mount Nikon F mount (with AF coupling and AF contacts)
Autofocus System

• TTL phase detection
• 5 area Multi-CAM900 (centre sensor is cross-type)
• AF detection range: -1 EV to +19 EV (ISO 100, normal temperature)
• Focus area manually selectable using multiselector
• Focus can be locked with AE/AF lock button or by pressing the shutter-release button halfway (Single Servo AF only)

AF area modes:
• Single Area AF
• Dynamic AF with Focus Tracking and Lock-on
• Closest Subject Priority Dynamic AF

Servo Modes:
• Single Servo AF [S]
• Continuous Servo AF [C]
• Manual focus [M]

Note: Camera body includes a selector on the lens mount to switch between autofocus and manual focus modes. When set to autofocus, a user-changeable Custom Setting dictates whether Single Servo AF or Continuous Servo AF will be used.

Shutter Exposure time is controlled both by the shutter and electronically within the CCD
Shooting Modes/Shooting Speed

• Continuous shooting at up to 3 fps
• Dynamic buffer design: For example, 12 frame buffer when camera is set to JPEG Fine; 4 frame buffer when camera is set to NEF (compressed).

Note: Nikon USA indicates that the speed of image processing in the D70 is such that, in internal testing, with the camera set to JPEG Normal, the D70 was able to fill an entire Sandisk Ultra II 256MB CompactFlash card at 3 fps without stopping, as the buffer cleared fast enough to always allow the next photo to be taken. So, in some cases, the number of frames that can be taken in a burst may be more - perhaps many more - than the specifications for a given file format indicate

• When power switch is turned to Off, camera finishes writing all photos to the card before powering down

Ambient Metering • TTL full-aperture exposure metering system
3D Color Matrix Metering using camera's 1005-pixel metering CCD
Center-Weighted Metering: 75% of the meter's sensitivity is concentrated on an 8mm diameter circle. Circle size is adjustable in rear LCD menu
Spot Metering: 2.3mm dia. circle, approx. 1% of entire frame; metering position is linked to the active focus area
• Exposure metering range is EV 0-20 (3D Color Matrix or Center-Weighted); EV 2-20 (Spot)
ISO Range 200 - 1600 in 1/3 step increments
Exposure • 30-1/8000 second in 1/2 or 1/3 step increments, plus Bulb
• Long exposure noise reduction possible

Exposure modes:
• Program (shiftable)
• Shutter Priority
• Aperture Priority
• Manual
• Digital Vari-Program (7 settings)

Exposure compensation possible:
• -5 to +5 EV in 1/3 or 1/2 EV increments

Automatic bracketing possible:
• 2 or 3 exposures, +/-2 EV in 1/2 or 1/3 EV steps
Built-in Flash

Flash Modes  • TTL: TTL flash control by 1,005 pixel RGB sensor
• Built-in Speedlight: i-TTL balanced Fill-Flash or standard i-TTL flash
(Spot metering or mode dial set to [M])
