On Deck: Photographers cover swimming, as shown in
The best photos of the games on the Stern website |
The web is filled with fine pictures from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, of the competitors themselves and of the photographers packing for and covering the event. Here are links to galleries and blogs that have caught our eye so far:
-
Gearing up
USA Today staffer Bert Hanashiro describes what Nikon gear he planned to take and how he was going to get it there in this video.
Others showing what they took to Beijing include
Detroit Free Press photographer Eric Seals (Canon equipment), Rod Mar of the
Seattle Times (Canon and Nikon) and Vincent Laforet, who is covering the games for
Newsweek (he has put together a
gallery of pictures showing the full complement of Canon cameras and lenses destined to board the plane with him).
-
Photo blogs o'plenty Seals, Mar and Laforet are also blogging throughout the games; Laforet is joined in the blogosphere by two other
Newsweek colleagues, Donald Miralle and Mike Powell. (Laforet has also recently started a photo blog that covers topics other than Olympics too.)
Other photo blogs we've spotted include a combined effort by Steve Russell, Lucas Oleniuk and Richard Lautens of the
Toronto Star, Jens Dresling, staff photographer at Danish-language
Politiken in Copenhagen, Marc Aspland of
The Times in London plus Kodak, in two blogs: PluggedIn and A Thousand Words (pin fanatics will want to check out the photos in the August 8, 2008 post.)

Galleries A collection of quiet, unusual and often humorous moments from Beijing, assembled by
Stern in Germany, is among our favourite galleries so far, mostly because of its quirky nature. Pictures are being added and removed regularly from this gallery; at this moment, there is a frame from water polo featuring a wardrobe malfunction that some will want to view when youngsters and employers aren't around.
Beijing Olympics photo galleries have also been put together by Sports Illustrated,
The Age (stills and multimedia),
Newsweek (days 1, 2, 3 and 4), the Toronto Star and the Los Angeles Times.
The Boston Globe's The Big Picture has a great collection of photos from the opening ceremony.
