Late this past week, we passed onto Canon USA our findings about EOS-1D Mark III autofocus with the sub-mirror fix in place and firmware v1.1.3 installed. We did this for two reasons:
While we'd thought we'd allowed enough time for Canon to put together an official response, so that the article could be published by today, a message from Canon USA last evening made it clear that they needed until into Monday to absorb what we've sent them. To be fair, we'd given only about a 24 hour window in which to respond.
After thinking about this today, we've decided that EOS-1D Mark III owners and those considering the purchase of the camera will be better served if the article update includes both our take and a response from Canon. So we're going to wait until Monday before pressing the Publish button.
Note, however, that while Canon USA is aware of our request for an official response, they haven't committed to giving one. We're not trying to suggest they've promised something that they haven't, though we're obviously hoping that one is forthcoming.
Also, if this is sounding more and more like we have an apocalyptic exposé on the camera ready to go, please know that's not the case. What we are trying to do is cover a lot of bases, beyond just simply answering the question about whether the camera's AI Servo autofocus is all good now.
Finally, we won't wait to publish beyond Monday. The article update is 8500 words, it's ready, and we know that we've disappointed many of you by missing self-imposed deadlines in recent weeks. Please accept our sincere apology for the missed deadlines, and please hold tight for another 48 hours.
