Sportsshooter.com has published an article by freelance photographer Tom Dahlin who shot some unusual, and quite beautiful, black-and-white infrared images on assignment for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA. The pictures are a mixture of game action and studio portraits.

Dahlin describes how he used a Canon EOS D60, modified to record infrared light, in conjunction with an Elinchrom Ranger flash that was filtered to emit only infrared illumination.

The photographer notes that an unanticipated side-effect of this technique is that the players' tattoos, which are in some cases very difficult to distinguish from their natural skin tones in visible light, are reproduced in very sharp relief under infrared light.
