X-Rite this morning has announced an agreement with Amazys Holding AG, the parent company of GretagMacbeth, that will see X-Rite take control of Amazys and, ultimately, the GretagMacbeth product line. While X-Rite and GretagMacbeth are expected to act as separate entities for the time being, with no short-term impact on the products and services of each company, a press release from X-Rite makes it clear that the two will effectively become one sometime after various regulatory hurdles are cleared in late spring 2006.
In a Reuters story, X-Rite's CEO describes the impetus for the deal:
It's time to get to innovation and new things, and the only way to do that is to combine companies," said X-Rite chief Michael Ferrara, who will be chief executive of the new company.
"We can't get to that if we're spending all our time taking market share from each other."
This is the not the first acquisition by X-Rite of a major colour industry player: in July 2003, the company bought Monaco, and still markets products under the Monaco brand.
