In an interview with Reuters, Nikon Corp. managing director Makoto Kimura says the company will boost production of the D70 digital SLR from the current 70,000 units a month to above 90,000 by September or October. Kimura also says that next fiscal year Nikon may consider exiting the film compact camera business. The company has seen film compact sales drop from 1.3 million units in fiscal 2002 to a projected 50,000 for the fiscal year that will end March 2005. Kimura says that Nikon has no plans to stop producing film SLRs.
