Sandisk has unveiled a Type I-size 4GB CompactFlash card with a 3-position switch that allows it to be configured as either a single, FAT32-formatted 4GB volume or as two FAT16-formatted 2GB volumes (for compatibility with older digital cameras that don't recognize FAT32-formatted media).

SanDisk will initially ship the card in a FAT16 configuration, with two partitions, on the assumption that most prospective purchasers will be using a digital camera that's not FAT32-ready. The 4GB CompactFlash card, which is part of Sandisk's standard line and therefore doesn't offer the speediness of their Ultra II and Extreme products, is slated to ship in April 2004 at an MSRP of US$1000.
