Nikon today announced the AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED, a lighter, less-costly alternative to a 300mm f2.8 that should offer similar autofocus speed and image quality.
Major features of the AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4 include:
An approximate focal length of 465mm when attached to a Nikon D1; 480mm when attached to a DCS 620 or DCS 620x.
A minimum aperture of f/32.
Silent Wave autofocus design.
Close focus distance of 4.8 feet for tight, tight portraits.
77mm filter size.
Weight of about 3 pounds.
Built-in retractable hood.
Detachable tripod-mounting collar.
Compatible with the TC-14E 1.4x teleconverter.
Available in black or light grey.
The US list price is US$1540, with shipping to commence at the beginning of October. Nikon made a flurry of other announcements today, including new consumer zoom lenses, the availability of several pro lenses in light grey and the Coolpix 880 digital camera.
