Nikon has announced the development of the AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6G supertelephoto lens. It will feature Silent Wave autofocus, a three-position (A/M, M/A, M) focus mode switch, a drop-in filter slot and Vibration Reduction.

Few other details have been given, and a price and release date have not been set. A prototype of the new lens will be on display in Nikon's service depot during the Open Championship golf tournament in Lancashire, England from July 19-22, as well as at the Photokina 2012 trade show in Cologne, Germany from September 18-23.
