The
New York Times has published a short article and a gallery of pictures by sports photographer Steven Sutton who remembers shooting the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in 1972.
In the article, Sutton briefly outlines the gear and workflow of a sports photographer in that era, which included manually processed Tri-X black-and-white film and a manual focus Nikon F camera with a "revolutionary auto winder".
The gallery photos, all from the Trials, depict an array of mustaches, hairstyles, clothing, and athletes smoking cigarettes that leave no doubt as to when they were taken.
