Foreign Policy magazine has published the first two parts of a five-part series of photo essays shot in Afghanistan by experienced photojournalists mostly using iPhones and the Hipstamatic iOS app. 

The first two essays featured are Balazs Gardi's "The War in Hipstamatic" and Teru Kuwayama's "Heavy Metal". Their work is part of an experimental project called Basetrack, which the magazine describes as a "multiplatform social media cornucopia". It combines photography, feeds, Facebook posts, Google Maps, and more in a web-based interface. The project tracks the U.S. 1st Battalion, Eighth Marines throughout their deployment in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan.
