Firmware update to bring manual exposure control to Canon EOS 5D Mark II video
Tuesday, May 26, 2009 | by Rob Galbraith
Canon USA has issued a notice stating that a pending firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark II will enable the manual selection of ISO, shutter speed and aperture while in the camera's video mode. Currently, all three parameters are set automatically by the camera when capturing movies, forcing users to employ what Canon describes as "inferior workarounds" to select the desired aperture in particular.

The firmware update is expected to come available as a free download in early June 2009.

More information is in a Canon USA eNewsletter below. In addition, a similar announcement by Canon in Europe, and published on the Digital Photography Review website, indicates that the update will allow the choosing of any available aperture, ISO settings up to 12,800 and shutter speeds between 1/30 and 1/4000.

No similar firmware update announcement has been made regarding the EOS Rebel T1i/500D's video mode.
