Kodak operated a nuclear reactor in Rochester basement

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle recently revealed that, in the years from 1974 to 2006, Kodak operated a small nuclear reactor in a basement of one of the buildings in Kodak Park, the company's industrial campus in Rochester, New York. The device, about the size of a refrigerator, contained 3.5 pounds of enriched uranium and was used to do research on neutron imaging.

Record setting photo over 1km long to be displayed in London

A photo montage created from more than 109,000 images of people jumping will be printed as a single photograph more than one kilometer long and exhibited at ExCel London from June 1 through June 9, reports the Royal Photographic Society. Leica has announced the M-Monochrom, a new M-series digital rangefinder camera with an 18.01 million image pixel, black-and-white only, 35mm format CCD sensor. The sensor has no color filter array, which improves sensitivity and, because it requires no color demosaicing interpolation, promises substantially better resolution than an 18-megapixel color sensor. Alongside the M-Monochrom, Leica also announced the X2, a fixed-lens, 16-megapixel compact with an APS-C format sensor.

Canon releases DPP with EOS 5D Mark III RAW processing fix

Digital Photo Professional (DPP) 3.11.26 for Mac and Windows corrects a bug in the previous release that resulted in slightly blurry conversions from EOS 5D Mark III RAW files. It also adds support for the EOS-1D X and several recently-announced lenses, plus implements other feature additions and fixes.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III shipments halted in Canada

Canon Canada has begun informing dealers that shipments of the EOS 5D Mark III have been suspended while the company sorts out a solution to a metering error problem that can occur in dark environments when the top LCD backlighting is switched on. While Canon Canada's shipping-stoppage notice applies to the Canadian market only, it's likely that Canon in other regions and countries will also be holding back the new digital SLR while a fix is developed.

Canon's EOS-1D C, announced today and slated to ship sometime later this year for about US$15,000 in the U.S., combines the body and still image features of the EOS-1D X with the ability to record up to 4K (4096 x 2160 pixels) video at 24fps, as well as 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) at up to 60fps.

Amply illustrated with pictures, the post gives a good idea of the internal complexity of a modern DSLR.
