In a blog entry today, top-notch U.S. sports photographer Brad Mangin has written an enthusiastic assessment of the EOS-1D Mark IV's AF system, based on his use of a preproduction body at an NFL football game this past weekend. Mangin, who refers to the EOS-1D Mark III and its AF system as "a complete disaster," says the EOS-1D Mark IV, by comparison, "performed flawlessly" as it captured many more properly focused frames than its predecessor.

LPA Design has posted firmware v5.0 for the PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 for Canon. The firmware updates are identical to November's public beta v4.374 firmware and include EOS 7D compatibility, a pre-flash boost mode for more consistent bounce flash exposures, rear curtain sync, automatic camera model detection and a slew of other new features and bug fixes.

The D3S and AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED are headed to the International Space Station. Nikon today announced that NASA has purchased eleven of the company's latest 12.05 million image pixel full-frame digital SLR and seven of its superwide zoom for use on the orbiting facility. Nikon indicates that NASA to date has captured over 700,000 pictures in space using Nikon equipment.

LPA Design rolls out long range mode in MultiMAX public beta firmware
LPA Design has commenced public beta testing of firmware v7.35 Build 12 for the PocketWizard MultiMAX wireless radio remote (USB port model). The key feature of this release is a slick long range mode meant for triggering primarily remote cameras from a distance or at crowded shooting events like the Olympics. The new firmware also introduces the ability to move a Custom ID channel (if present in the unit) to a different frequency, plus you can now configure a receiver to be active on more than one ABCD zone at a time.

Adobe Camera Raw 5.6, Photoshop Lightroom 2.6 now available
Emerging from release candidate status today are Adobe Camera Raw 5.6 for Photoshop CS4 as well as Photoshop Lightroom 2.6. The final versions of each for Mac and Windows, as well as DNG Converter 5.6, add 20 more camera models to the list of RAW files each software can convert. Newly-supported models include the Canon EOS 7D, Canon EOS-1D Mark IV and Nikon D3S.

Canon USA has posted updaters for its Picture Style Editor and EOS Utility applications for Mac and Windows, as well as Original Data Security Tools for Windows only. Picture Style Editor 1.6.1 and Original Data Security Tools 1.7.1 add support for the EOS 7D and EOS-1D Mark IV. EOS Utility 2.7.2 (Mac) / 2.7.3 (Windows) does too, plus enables mirror lockup shooting as well as the setting of AEB, drive mode and flash options. These added capabilities are restricted to certain newer Canon digital SLRs.

Canon releases new firmware for three cameras, transmitter
Canon has posted new firmware for three of its digital SLRs as well as the WFT-E2/E2A wireless transmitter. Version 1.2.4 for the 5D Mark II adds support for the WFT-E4 II/WFT-E4 II A transmitter and "[c]orrects a phenomenon in which visible noise may appear in images taken by continuous Bulb shooting." Version 1.3.0 for the EOS-1D Mark III and v1.2.0 for the EOS-1Ds Mark III enable these cameras to work with the WFT-E2 II/WFT-E2 II A. In addition, v2.0.0 of the firmware for the WFT-E2/E2A allows this transmitter to function with the upcoming EOS-1D Mark IV.

Paul C. Buff Einstein 640 monolight on track to ship in January
The Einstein 640, an innovative 640ws monolight from lighting maker Paul C. Buff, is nearing release. Final validation of the electronics is expected to be completed by the end of the week, says company founder Paul Buff. Assuming no last-minute hiccups, pre-ordering is scheduled to commence before the end of this month, with delivery from the company's Nashville, Tennessee-based headquarters to follow in the first half of January 2010.

Nikon updates 300mm f/2.8, 2x teleconverter
Next month, Nikon will ship updated versions of its 300mm f/2.8 and 2x teleconverters. The AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II features Nikon's four-stop image stabilization (the previous lens had a three-stop rating) and incorporates an additional focus mode - A/M - which reduces the chance of switching from AF to manual focus when touching the focus ring accidentally. The TC-20E III 2x teleconverter is the world's first, says a Nikon press release, to utilize an aspherical element for improved optical performance.
