Beta firmware for EOS-1D Mark III being tested at Osaka event
Since the weekend, Canon technicians have been installing beta firmware v1.1.1 into the EOS-1D Mark IIIs of photographers covering the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan.

Nikon unveils full-frame D3 digital SLR
At a press conference today in Tokyo, Nikon took the wraps off the D3, a new digital SLR that has at its heart a Nikon-designed full-frame 12.05 million image pixel CMOS sensor that can capture photos at up to 9 fps at full resolution (called FX Format mode), or up to 11 fps (with some restrictions) when the camera is set to capture 5.14 million image pixels in DX Format mode (where the camera utilizes only a smaller central part of the image sensor).

Nikon D300 weighs in at 12.21MP, shoots at up to 8 fps
While the D3 is the star of today's Nikon announcements, the D300 has the potential to steal the show. It incorporates the same 51-area autofocus system, 3-inch (diagonal), 920,000-dot rear LCD, Picture Control options, 14-bit A/D conversion, LiveView, HDMI video out, AF calibration adjustment, UDMA CompactFlash card support, real-time lateral chromatic aberration correction, Active D-Lighting, compatibility with the new WT-4/4A transmitter and more.

Nikon adds VR to three supertelephotos, announces two new zooms
Rounding out Nikon's announcements today are a total of five new lenses. Two are zooms: the AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED and AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED. Plus there are three updated supertelephotos, all of which gain Nikon's image stabilizing VR II: AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G ED VR, AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/4G ED VR and AF-S Nikkor 600mm f/4G ED VR.

Beta HD Photo plug-ins for Photoshop updated
Microsoft has released an updated beta version of the HD Photo plug-in for Photoshop for Windows, and introduced a Universal Binary beta for Photoshop for Mac. An entry on the blog of Microsoft's Bill Crow, Program Manager for HD Photo, indicates that these are likely to be operationally identical to the final versions of the plug-ins for each platform.

Canon announces 21MP EOS-1Ds Mark III
Canon has announced the EOS-1Ds Mark III, the first 35mm-style digital SLR to break the 20MP barrier. The new model combines a 21.03 million image pixel self-cleaning sensor and maximum 5 fps shooting rate in a body that's nearly identical in appearance to the EOS-1D Mark III, and shares most of that camera's features and specifications as well. The EOS-1Ds Mark III has a larger viewfinder than the EOS-1D Mark III, a narrower ISO range of ISO 100-1600 (plus 50 and 3200) and support for the UDMA protocol for quicker writing to an inserted CompactFlash card.

Canon to ship EOS 40D in early September
In early September, Canon will ship the EOS 40D, a 10.08 million image pixel replacement for the EOS 30D that includes a self-cleaning sensor, a new-design 9-point autofocus system, maximum 6.5 fps shooting rate, 3-inch (diagonal), 230,000-dot rear LCD with Live View, a larger viewfinder, Highlight Tone Priority, High ISO Noise Reduction and more.

Camera Bits releases Photo Mechanic 4.5.2
Camera Bits has released Photo Mechanic 4.5.2 for Mac and Windows, a maintenance update of the browsing application that's popular with news and sports photographers. The Mac version gains support for the basic processing of EOS-1D Mark III RAW files, while v4.5.2 on both platforms sees a long list of minor functionality tweaks, bug fixes and support for photo upload templates (one for Digital Railroad is included).

Apple announces new-design iMacs, updates iLife and iWork suites
At an Apple press event this morning at the company's Cupertino, California headquarters, new-design iMac models with 20-inch and 24-inch displays were unveiled, along with new versions of the company's iLife and iWork suites.
