Nikon posts ViewNX, Transfer updates, new Capture NX2 release coming soon
Nikon this week has posted Nikon ViewNX 1.3.0 and Transfer 1.4.0 for Mac and Windows, updates to each that add features and correct bugs. The list of changes in ViewNX is particularly lengthy, and includes the addition of processing support for RAW NRW images captured with the Coolpix P6000. Nikon has also announced a v2.2 update for Capture NX2 that promises improved batch processing speed, expanded lens correction functions and the ability to process P6000 NRWs. It's slated for release in early April.

LPA Design sets revised date for MiniTT1, FlexTT5 firmware rollout
In a posting on the PocketWizard website, LPA Design has set a revised date for the release of new firmware for the Canon versions of the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5. It's now expected to "be ready for rollout on or about March 31st," says the posting. Shipments of the products have been halted as well, to allow the new firmware to be installed.

HD video capture, 15MP sensor in Canon EOS Rebel T1i
Canon today has introduced the EOS Rebel T1i, an evolution of the Rebel XSi that incorporates a 15.06 million image pixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 processor and three inch (diagonal), 920,000 dot rear LCD into a body that's nearly identical to its predecessor. For pro photographers, though, the main attraction of Canon's newest entry-level digital SLR may well be its ability to capture HD video with sound, making it a budget alternative to the EOS 5D Mark II for Canon still shooters wanting to capture moving pictures with their SLR. We have a first look at the camera, plus downloadable video files captured with it.

Canon unveils Speedlite 270EX
Canon is replacing the oldest flash in its lineup, the Speedlite 220EX, with the Speedlite 270EX. The new shoe-mount flash unit, announced today alongside the EOS Rebel T1i, is more compact than its predecessor, features a two-position manual zoom head with 28mm and 50mm lens coverage, a metal mounting foot and quick-lock mechanism, bounce capability and support for both E-TTL II and manually-controlled flash output (the latter is adjusted via an in-camera menu only).

Canon Canada ending Calgary, Montreal camera repair, expanding CPS resources
Canon Canada will end the repair of cameras and other photo gear at its facilities in Calgary and Montreal later this month, as the first step in a consolidation and expansion of Canon Professional Service (CPS) resources in Mississauga. A recent notification to Canadian CPS members indicates that repair services at its western and eastern regional locations will cease on March 31, 2009; after that date, all gear requiring repair is to be shipped directly to Canon's service facility adjacent to the company's Canadian headquarters in Ontario. The centralization of repairs is the kickoff to what's promised to ultimately be an improved CPS service. We have initial details of what Canadian CPS members can expect in the months ahead.
