The American Civil Liberties Union reports that the City of Boston has agreed to pay $170,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a man who was arrested for shooting video of Boston police with his cell phone. The settlement comes in the wake of a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, which declared that the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects the right of citizens to record police performing their duties in a public place.

Apple today has unveiled a new iPad. The latest iteration of its popular tablet has a higher-resolution 9.7-inch display (at 2048 x 1536 pixels, it contains four times more pixels than its predecessor) that is also said to have a 44% wider colour gamut, a faster A5X dual-core processor (with quad-core graphics circuitry), a new 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with promised improved photo quality and the ability to record 1080p video, voice dictation and optional 4G LTE cellular data network support. The company has also announced an updated Apple TV, featuring a boost in output resolution from 720p to 1080p and a restyled user interface, plus iPhoto for iOS devices.

Canon has announced the EOS 5D Mark III, the highly-anticipated update of the popular EOS 5D Mark II that features a 22.12 million image pixel full-frame CMOS sensor, 6fps top shooting rate, a standard ISO range of 100-25,600 (which can be expanded to as high as 102,400), the same 61-point AF system as the EOS-1D X, 63-zone metering, CompactFlash and SD card slots, DIGIC 5+ image processing, 1080p/29.97fps video capture with new compression options, timecode embedding and a headphone jack, all in a reworked magnesium alloy body that takes its styling cues from the EOS 7D.

Wireless radio comes to Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT, Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT
Alongside the Canon EOS 5D Mark III comes a new Canon flash and flash transmitter. The standout feature of the Speedlite 600EX-RT and Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT is the ability to command and trigger remote 600EX-RTs with a wireless radio signal, thereby eliminating the misfires associated with optical signaling. Plus, the interface for adjusting the exposure mode and output for up to five groups of remote Speedlites is a dramatic improvement over all of Canon's earlier flash products. The company has also announced the Speedlite 600EX, a version of the new flash without the radio transmission abilities.
