Halloween goblins invade Photo Mechanic 2.0r10
If you downloaded Photo Mechanic 2.0r10 for Mac, Lite or Pro version, before today, dust off your browser and download again. That's because the 2.0r10 versions available for about the last week contain a bug that causes the program to cease functioning on October 31st. Fixed versions are now posted (though the Photo Mechanic web page incorrectly lists October 11 as the posting date), and are free upgrades for previous owners of 2.x versions of the program.

Nikon D1 Hoodcap keeps LCD scratch-free
The Hoodman Hoodcap, a see-through cap for the Nikon D1's rear LCD monitor, is now shipping. The Hoodcap, which replaces the opaque cap that ships with the camera, should be a boon for wearers of eyeglasses especially, or anyone else concerned about keeping their LCD monitor in pristine condition. The hard plastic cap, which fits firmly and snugly into place, does a yeoman's job of protecting the LCD monitor from scratches while still allowing easy viewing of images on it.

Maxtor introduces inexpensive FireWire drives
Maxtor yesterday announced two external FireWire hard drives at a price per megabyte that is among the lowest around for name brand FireWire drives. The 40GB model has a list price of US$280; the 80GB drive, US$400. These prices are an order of magnitude cheaper than similar capacity FireWire drives from other major manufacturers, though Maxtor's specs, including a 5400rpm rotation speed, suggest the drives may be somewhat slower than the best available from the competition as well.
