Nikon has released updates to several of its digital SLR-related applications, including ViewNX, WT-4 Setup Utility, WT-4 Camera Control Utility and Thumbnail Selector. Changes include bug fixes and the addition of support for Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6.2 in several of the new versions.

A sweet, funny video entitled Chicken vs Penguin has taken the US$100,000 top prize in Nikon USA's Nikon Festival contest. Submitted by budding filmmaker Marko Slavnic, it tells the story "of unexpected love brought to life through a fast food mascot rivalry between a boy and girl." Like all of the over 1200 entries, Chicken vs Penguin is less than 140 seconds long.

Canon announces availability of new wireless file transmitters
Canon USA has announced that Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E4 II A for the EOS 5D Mark II is now shipping, as is Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E5A for the EOS 7D. Both have an expected street price of US$699.99 in the U.S. Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2 II A for 1-series Mark IIIs and the EOS-1D Mark IV is slated for release later in this quarter. A price has not been set.

Lexar has announced that both its Professional 233X and Professional 300X CompactFlash card lines will now top out at 32GB. 8GB Eye-Fi Pro X2 wireless memory card introduced
Wireless memory card maker Eye-Fi has introduced the Eye-Fi Pro X2, an 8GB SDHC card that features an 802.11n radio for quicker uploading, faster read/write speeds to the card itself and a new option called Endless Memory that enables the card to automatically delete the oldest photos and video from the card once it has confirmed they've been successfully transferred to their destination. The company is also releasing a companion application, called Eye-Fi Center, that allows a wireless network configuration to be added to the card even when not connected to the Internet and can manage the republishing of photos and video to various online destinations, including photos and video not originally captured to an Eye-Fi card.

Canon EOS-1D Mark IV now shipping in the U.S., Canada
The EOS-1D Mark IV, Canon's 16.06 million image pixel, 10fps replacement for the troubled EOS-1D Mark III, has been released for sale in the U.S. and Canada. We've received the first reports of photographers taking delivery of the camera in the U.S. starting on December 31, while we've confirmed that Canon Canada commenced shipments starting on December 30 (shipping times and today's holiday mean that most Canadian dealers outside the Toronto area won't receive their initial allotment of bodies before early next week).
